“Anxiety is a complicated topic due to its complexity. This information is important for all of us to feel supported, safe, and aware of the many aspects of this subject.”
Anxiety, according to Oxford Dictionaries, is defined as, “a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.”
Everyone experiences this at some point. In fact, anxiety is a somewhat normal reaction to stress as it can initiate our flight or fight response and keep us alert to our surroundings. However, it is important to learn the difference between feelings of anxiety and a true anxiety disorder.
There are several different anxiety disorders, and they all have defining characteristics that make their diagnoses possible. On my next YOUNGER podcast episode, I will help you distinguish key factors that relate to anxiety, such as:
- Intensity and length of time
- Impairment
- Physical manifestations
Dr. Robyn Benson will discuss a variety of anxiety disorders and define what makes each different from one another. You might be learning more about anxiety for the first time with the interest to increase your own knowledge, or maybe it is to help your child, a family member or a friend.
Dr. Robyn explains the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) categories of anxiety disorders as three groupings:
- Anxiety Disorders
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders
- Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders
“Anxiety manifests in a number of ways depending on both the disorder and the person experiencing it.”
